Santorini Best Beaches: A Volcanic Wonder

Santorini’s coastal beauties have been influenced by the volcanic nature of the island. That is why the beaches in Santorini are characterized by colorful rocks, black, white and red pebbles. Due to their special geographical features, the beaches in Santorini are much different than other beaches in popular holiday destinations.

The lunar formation of the island, the unique landscapes and the exceptional clarity of the Aegean Sea create a picturesque ambience that definitely fascinate any visitor. The island of Santorini has beaches galore, in total they are 17.

Red Beach: The most famous beach in Santorini

The most popular beach among all the beaches in Santorini is the Red Beach.

The Red Beach is located at the south part of the island, right next to the Ancient Village of Akrotiri.

The Beach is distinguished by a very special landscape and extraordinary surrounding scenery. The stretch of pebbly sand is surrounded by high, bright-red cliffs, originated many years ago by the erosion of the mountain that is located behind of the beach.

Along with the crystal-clear waters and its isolated position, the beach offers a unique sight to the infinity of the Aegean Sea.  Even though the beach is not organized with leisure and touristic facilities, there are only with few umbrellas and sunbeds, it attracts many visitors and gets very crowded, especially during peak season.

The east side of the island is a gentle downward slope that extends over the sea. This formation of the island created four beaches. The beach of Kamari Village, Monolithos, Perissa and Perivolos.

Kamari Beach: A cosmopolitan attraction

Kamari Beach is about 4,5 km long and it is totally covered with black sand. It is considered to be one of the most cosmopolitan seaside villages in Santorini and the main attraction of the area. Along the central promenade it is full of fine dining restaurants, traditional tavernas, bars and shops. The beach is very well organized with leisure facilities, sunbeds, umbrellas, water sports and courts.

Monolithos Beach

The beach of Monolithos is located in the east side of the island, north from Kamari. The beach is sandy, family friendly and well organized with tavernas and water sports.

Perivolos & Perissa beaches

A well know beach located at the southern side of the island is the beach Perissa. The beach is very well organized and that is why it is populated with families and young people enjoying bars, night clubs and camping.

The beach of Perivolos is the continuation of Perissa beach with volcanic black sand and crystal-clear water. Perivolos is surely one of the most well- organized beaches of Santorini, equipped with umbrellas and sunbeds, water sports facilities, beach volley courts, restaurants and traditional fish tavernas.
